Navigating Change when the Old Maps Fail
Client Opportunity
The Situation: You might feel anxious, confused and burnt out, as if you’re continuing to swim north but a deeper current is pulling you south. This can be experienced as an increasing unease about what you’re doing with your life, or a significant change or crisis, such as a loss or illness, .
When you move off the map you’ve used to navigate life so far, and stop trusting the safety of the ego you necessarily built to fit in, any change will feel risky. By exploring the unmapped depths of your guiding unconscious, life becomes - if nothing else - much more interesting.
In the depth psychology of Carl Jung, life’s difficulties aren’t problems to be fixed, but invitations to listen to your deeper Self, and prompts towards finding what supports you inside so you can move more surely towards building the life you want to live.
At its simplest level depth psychology coaching prioritises understanding why you do what you do, rather than just trying to change what you do.
Asking not “How do I get what I want?” but “Who is this person doing the wanting?”
The ultimate goal is individuation, Jung’s word for becoming the truest version of yourself. This involves integrating all parts of yourself, most of which are unconscious - hidden beneath the surface of your daily awareness.
The way, as in a labyrinth, is not a straight line but a winding, spiralling path.
“The labyrinth is not a trap, but an opportunity. It is a chance to confront our deepest fears and desires, to discover the hidden resources and strengths within ourselves. By entering the labyrinth, we are taking a risk, stepping into the unknown. But it is only by taking this risk that we can hope to find our way to a fuller, more authentic way of being in the world”. Margaret Atwood
To frame this as a building metaphor, you can’t build a new house on a cracked foundation. Before reconstruction you need to go down into the basement, inspect the structure, find and shore up the supports.
About Me: I’m a 62-year-old builder/property manager now pivoting to use my life experience supporting men and women navigate change. I bring the pragmatic approach of a builder with the curiosity of a global traveller. As a coach I don’t know what’s right for you, but I believe there’s something in you that does know.
